Larry Howell, former associate editorial editor of The News, dies at 80

Larry E. Howell, a former associate editor of the editorial page of The Dallas Morning News, died peacefully July 7, 2018, at age 80. Mr. Howell’s award-winning editorials and columns were written for The News during the late 1960s. Mr. Howell studied journalism at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri, and received his B.A. degree in journalism from Southern Methodist University in 1961. Twelve years later, he became the first president of the Press Club of Dallas to have been helped through college by a Press Club scholarship.

Mr. Howell was news editor of the daily Monett (Mo.) Times, sports editor of the Sarasota (Fla.) Journal, editor of The Texas Mesquiter, and associate editor of the editorial page of The Dallas Morning News. While at the Mesquiter and The Dallas Morning News, Mr. Howell won or shared in a total of nine Katie awards from the Press Club of Dallas. In 1968 he received recognition from the University of Missouri School of Journalism for an editorial he wrote for The Dallas Morning News. In 1970, Mr. Howell co-founded and was the first editor of Financial Trend, a weekly newspaper focused on publicly held corporations in the Southwest. From 1975 to his retirement, Mr. Howell was engaged in investor relations, as president of Howell Communications, The Howell Group, and its parent company, Halyx Partners, Inc. Born to Lawrence and Meda Howell of Clinton, Missouri, Larry was beloved by his family–his wife Ruth, sister Nancy, children Jennifer, Mark, Jonathan, David and Sarah, six grandchildren, and many friends.
