BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES

Saturday, December 15, 2012

Southern Methodist University

 

President Liz Oliphant called the meeting to order at 9:36 a.m.

Board members present were Michelle Bleiberg, Delisa Day, Phyllis Hammond, Janie Loveless, Allen Manning, Deborah Marine, Tony Pederson, Niki McCuistion, Robert Smith, Paul Wahlstrom and Elizabeth Zavala.

Minutes of the November 17, 2012, regular board meeting were approved as submitted.

For the eleven months ending November 30, 2012, President Oliphant reported total revenue was $35,031.18 and total operating expenses were $23,347.47 vs. $11,452.72 total revenue and $13,556.53 total operating expenses for the same period last year.

Committee Reports:

Professional Development - Manning reported that the Ultimate Freelancer workshop is tentatively scheduled for late February at Southern Methodist University.  Topics will include technical issues, multi-media and finances.

Programming/Events - Zavala stated that no updates were available. McCuistion suggested that Robert E. Hall, the Dallas-based author of “This Land of Strangers,” a book about fractured relationships, be invited to be part of a forum that would examine the media’s responsibility to the public. She added that the club could seek a grant to present the event and similar programs.

Special Events/FundraisingNo report.

Living Legends - Janie Loveless stated that the committee will report at the January meeting.

Networking Events - Phyllis Hammond and Paul Wahlstrom stated that the January 22 networking event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Milo Butterfingers, located at SMU Boulevard and Greenville Avenue. The December event at the Warwick Melrose Library Bar drew a good-size crowd.

Publicity/Marketing – Bleiberg reported that she is coordinating a master media contact list to publicize club events and activities.

Membership Retention - Delisa Day stated that she and Chris Howell are continuing to make calls to secure renewals.

Membership DevelopmentAllen Manning reported that he has talked to 25 DFW TV news staff members and sent the link to the club’s Join webpage to them. Loveless will give Manning a list of local high school journalism teachers for recruiting purposes.

Excellence in Journalism – Robert Smith stated that the committee plan includes talking to other press clubs about execution of the judging process. He also reported that he will survey local media about the best ways to structure the program.

JFK Assassination Anniversary – No report.

Old Business:

Paul Wahlstrom recommended that the Club begin planning for awarding journalism scholarships. After discussion, the board decided that President Oliphant will talk to Jay Rosser of the Press Club Foundation board and Brent Christopher of the Communities Foundation, which administers the existing scholarship program, to help determine how the Club should proceed.

New Business:

The board approved transferring to the Club’s savings account all the proceeds of the Breaking News and Ceilings event, reserving 15% of the proceeds in the Club’s operating account to cover event administration costs.

McCuistion recommended that an audit committee be appointed and that it consist of secretary Bleiberg and president-elect Tony Pederson.

The next regular board meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m., January 19, 2013, at Southern Methodist University. There being no other business, the meeting adjourned at 11:05 a.m.
