Board of Directors Meeting Minutes – September 15, 2012

President Liz Oliphant called the meeting to order at 9:55 a.m.

Board members present were Hugh Aynesworth, Michelle Bleiberg, Delisa Day, Phyllis Hammond, Chris Howell, Deborah Marine, Niki McCuistion, Robert Smith, Paul Wahlstrom and Elizabeth Zavala.

Minutes of the July 21, 2012, and August 11, 2012, regular board meetings were approved.

For the eight-month period ending August 31, 2012, total revenue was $8,606 and total operating expenses were $8,893 vs. $8,447 total revenue and $10,512 total operating expenses for the same period last year.

Committee reports:

Special Events/Fundraising – Marine reported that AT&T provided written commitment to be the presenting sponsor of the “Breaking News and Ceilings” event honoring DFW’s television news directors. The event will be held October 29, 2012, at the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas.Marine asked that we have a calendar of future programs prepared to distribute at the October 29 event as a way of encouraging guests to join the Club. McCuistion reported that the Club website features a new donation button to allow contributions via PayPal.

Networking Events – Phyllis Hammond reported that the September networking event will be held September 25 at NYLO Dallas at South Side; the October 16 event, featuring Arts District executive director Veletta Lill, will be held at Jorge’s in the Dallas Arts District.

Membership Retention – Chris Howell and Delisa Day are contacting members whose memberships have lapsed and requested help from the board to reach out to those members.

Program – Several program ideas were discussed including a program with Rena Pederson on her experiences in Egypt and information about the new Texas Daily TV program.

Excellence in Journalism – Robert Smith stated that the committee is drafting logistics, format and judging criteria for the awards event, tentatively scheduled to be held in late fall.

Regarding the update to the constitution, President Oliphant stated that, per Scott Chase, who helped streamline the Club’s governing documents, the constitution approved at the 2012 annual meeting does not need changes. She will verify if changes require a vote by the membership.

The board approved $350 to rent the Texas Theater on September 23, 2012, for a public tribute to the late Alex Burton. The Club will seek contributions at the tribute to reimburse the rental fee and work with the Theater and Burton family to fund refreshments.

At the request of Wahlstrom, the board held a discussion of the Club’s relationship with the existing Press Club of Dallas Foundation and the scholarship funds being held for the Foundation at Communities Foundation of Texas. Oliphant will contact Jay Rosser and/or Mac Duvall regarding the status of the Press Club Foundation and report back to the board.

The next regular board meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m., October 20, 2012, at Windsor Senior Living Center. There being no other business, the meeting adjourned at 11:49 a.m.
